Meditation
Meditation is a practice that enables you to calm your mind. There are many types of meditation, and these practices are found in several faith traditions around the world. Meditation has been found to decrease anxiety, encourage creativity, decrease the effects of some physical illnesses, and elevate mood. Meditating in a group has the added bonus of a sense of community connection, which is essential for overall wellness.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by being conscious and aware while focusing one's attention on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. It can be used as a therapeutic technique that helps to rewire the brain.
Breathwork
Breathwork is any type of breathing technique or exercise that focuses on the breath. Benefits include relaxation, stress relief, improved mindfulness, self awareness and a sense of feeling more grounded. Brain benefits include training the brain to activate the parasympathetic nervous system that signals the brain to relax and release anxious thoughts and feelings. It also allows more oxygen to the brain as neurons in the brain require a steady flow of oxygen to function at their best. Many people practice breathwork to help improve mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.
Sound Baths
Sound baths are an immersive listening experience with meditative elements that use sound to promote gentle but powerful effects and restorative processes to the brain, mind and body. Dr. Jackson highlights some brain benefits to sound baths on TikTok. Click: Brain Benefits to learn more. Consistent sound bath sessions can reduce anxiety levels, tension, sadness, pain and improve mood, release tension from the body and more.
Movement
Movement for virtual community events include stretching, body postures, sitting meditation poses and any standing, reclining and seated positions. All movements are light and may include slight holding of positions. Among other benefits, brain and mental health benefits include an increase in feel good neurotransmitters (i.e., an increase in endorphins, etc.), stress relief, releasing emotions from the body and helps strengthen a connection to the body.
